GERALD TOOK himself to Daniel’s apartments after he finished the note to Captain Forsythe and dressed for the day. He knocked lightly before entering and found his grandfather in the kitchen making breakfast. It smelled great, the pork bellies mixing with fresh bread. When the old man found time to bake Gerald never actually figured out, but it was always delicious.
Daniel cackled and said, “Knew you’d be ’round once the bread wafted down to you.”
Gerald grinned and leaned against the counter. “I actually came by to check on you, but I’ll take breakfast if you’ve extra.”
Daniel made a rude noise and stabbed a fork at him to move him out of the kitchen. “Go. Sit.”
Chuckling, Gerald retired to the safety of the sitting area and picked up the paper his grandfather had clearly been reading before the bread finished baking. He read through the headlines on the front page and frowned. He called out, “Did you see this? About raising the tax?”
Another rude noise echoed from the kitchen before Daniel said, “I did. It’s going to hurt too many folk, and the blighters don’t even care. Going to run us all to the poorhouses, they are.”
Gerald knew that wasn’t true of their personal finances; the shop did very well. He did worry about friends and colleagues who rode the edge, though, always just one unexpected loss away from ruin. It wasn’t a light matter.
Daniel walked out with two plates filled and set one in front of Gerald. “No sense worryin’ about it, lad. Nothing to be done.”
“Something should be done,” Gerald muttered, mutinous. He broke the yolk on his eggs and mixed it all around with the toast and pork bellies. “I need to talk to MacCormack, make sure he’ll be all right with this.”
Daniel pointed his knife at Gerald and said, “It’s not up to you to keep all those ruffians in business.”
Gerald scowled and replied sharply, “Those ruffians are my friends, Granddad.”
“Unfortunately.”
“Don’t start. We were having a nice breakfast.”
They fell into a sullen silence, each focusing on the food until it was almost gone.
Honestly, Gerald thought, still irritated. One little brush with the law five years ago, and Granddad just can’t let it go.
Daniel finally asked, “Where’s Harry?”
“Had sommat to do with his quartermaster this morning. He’ll be back for lunch. And speaking of Harry, I’ve written to his captain, inviting him to dine with me and Leo and have no idea how to get it to the man. I don’t want to rifle through Harry’s things, and there’s no guarantee he even knows where the man’s staying during their leave anyhow. He could be on the other side of England by now.”
Daniel held out a hand and said, “Give it here. I’ll see it’s delivered.”
Gerald took it as the peace offering it was and handed over the note from where it rested on the sofa. “Thank you.”
Daniel grunted into his tea and set the note beside him. “So what are you going to do with Harry gone this morning?”
“I desperately need to work on Leo’s groom gifts.
